1999 12:39 SW breeze with sunny
periods. like yesterday a clearance is quite possible.
The sun may well be shining like it did yesterday, when there was
a lovely sunset. This will be the last weather forecast until
late November 1999.
January 1999 14:15 yet another
very nice winter day, but overcast. Quite bright in the west
so some chance of light in Maeshowe today.
January 1999 12:02 Calm, overcast
and pleasant day but not much ggod for sunsets! Weather forecast
seems the same for the next few days, but try a look at the satellite
January 1999 13:34 Yet another
beautiful day! Some possibility of a sunset, although there
is some cloud in the west. Sunny, calm and dry at present.
January 1999 10:37 Nice day but
totally overcast with rain forecast this afternoon. Not much
chance of a sunset, but will report later if it looks better.
January 1999 12:43 Yet another
beautiful day - nice than many in the summer - clear blue sky, flat
calm, but with the usual grey cloud build up over the Hoy Hills.
This could easily clear in time for a sunset this afternoon.
Everyone visits in July and August which can be foggy and damp, why
not come to lovely peaceful and quiet Orkney in winter?
january 1999 13:54 Pleasanr but
overcast day. Hazy sunshine at present. Some possibility
of a sunset, but low probability.
January 1999 12:56 Nice sunny
day at present, but some cloud in the west. There could easily
be some sun down the passage today.
14:13 Looking very good - sunny and clear
January 1999 13:33 Again overcast,
quite bright in the SW so still a possibility, but unlikely.
January 1999 12:38 Totally overcast
today - no sunset expected.
January 1999 12:42 Another beautiful
dawn today and nice morning. Now clouding over from the west
and wind rising. Prospects not very good, but check at 15:00
January 1999 14:04 Nice day but
totally overcast so no sunset today. Yesterday turned out to
be very dramatic with one of the best sunsets of the period.
January 1999 13:25 Beautiful clear
sunny day. Solstice +29 days. Should be a good sunset,
and be one of the last days that the sun actually reaches the back
January 1999 12:38 Another pleasant
day, but there is the usual cloud in the west. However it will
still be worth taking a look at about 14:55 when the sun should start
January 1999 12:44 A pleasant
day with sunny periods. Some blue patches, but there is a large
bank of cloud in the south west so the prognosis for a sunset is poor.
January 1999 12:42 The forecast
storm force wind and snow did not materialise - as expected.
However it is totally overcast with a strong SW breeze and occasional
sleet. Not looking very hopeful today. however yesterday
was similar and the sun actually did shine into Maeshowe for a time!
January 1999 13:38 Raining hard
and heavily overcast. Some brightness in west, but sunset non
likely. There is a very large and deep depression approaching.
January 1999 13:00 Very overcast
- no sunset today
1999 13:07 Overcast with wind
and rain. Some lightening in west but a sunset seems unlikely.
January 1999 12:52 Wind and rain
all night followed by a clearance at present. Watery sun in
the west, with cloud, but a sunset is not impossible. Yesterday's
blinking sun was very dramatic. Approximate times today are.
14:50 sun hits back wall; 15:00 sun disappears; 15:30 sun reappears;
15:32 sun finally sets
January 1999 12:40 Yet another
great day! Come to sunny Orkney in winter. Virtually totally
clear sky with just a hint of cloud on the horizon. Looking
very good to see the sun blink at Maeshowe.
January 1999 13:35 Sorry to be
late - logging on problems. Yet another lovely day here in Orkney,
but again some cloud in the west. Very good chance of a nice
sunset however. Yesterday's sunset was impeded by cloud, but
flashing was nearly seen from the Hindatoun Stone on Stoneyhill as
below. Excellent sunset today, marred only by the cloud which
stopped the reappearance of the sun on the north side of the Ward
Hill of Hoy.
1999 12:51 Sunny periods and heavy
showers. Sunny at present but there is a large shower in the
west. It could of course pass and there could a sunset.
Then again another may appear. Worth a try as "flashing" is
about to occur.
1999 11.53 Another even nicer day
today! Totally clear in the west at present. Looking very
good at present. Yesterday there was an excellent sunset which fizzled
out at the very last minute. Unfortunately a large shower cloud
appeared at the wrong moment.
1999 13:04 A beautiful clear sunny
day. Very frosty this morning. Sky is clear all around
but some cxlouds in west. A very good chance for a good sunset.
1999 13:50 A cold but very fine
day with showers. Good possibility of a sunset today if a large
shower does not arrive at the wrong time. At present clear and
sunny but some cloud in the west.
1999 12:58 Back to work day!
A grey overcast day with no sun. The forecast said that it would
clear in the afternonn, but there is little sign of that yet.
Maybe worth a look at 14:40 all the same.
1999 12:57 Yet another nice dawn,
but now overcast. Totally gray in the south west at the moment.
However you never know...
1999 12:55 Looking OK after a
rather nasty morning. Some difficulties with computer caused
by NT4 Upgrade 4 may have stopped last two days' foreecasts going
online - sorry. Has anyone else had problems with this Service
Pack? I thought that my hard drives were trashed, but it seems
to be the Service Pack. Ugh!
1999 14:00 After a very nice strat
to the day it is now windy and overcast so no sunset.
1999 12:00 Happy New Year to everyone.
A lovely day for the Ba' but not much use for the Maeshowe sunset.
A nice clear, calm winter's day. The Ba' went up and the game
was very exciting.
December 1998 12:55 Totally overcast,
and not looking at all good. Very unlikely to be a sunset.
Have a nice Hogmanay.
December 1998 13:19 Beautiful
sunshine with a nice breeze as we say in Orkney where we enjoy "the
benefit of the wind" quite often. Good prospects although there
is low cloud all around the horizon. Worth watching. Turned
out to be a wonderful clear sunset.
December 1998 12:49 We had Aurora
borealis and frost last night. Overcast today but quite bright
in the south west, so like yesterday the sun could appear at sunset.
December 1998 13:00 Yet another
beautiful morning, calm and sunny. Now clouding over from the
west, but there are still clear patches too. The sun appeared
at about 14:30 and there was a rather weak sunset.
December 1998 13:38 Very heavy
rain overnight. Now sunny periods, with showers, At present
clear patches in west with sunshine here, so that a sunset is possible.
December 1998 14:08 Another nice
dawn, but totally overcast now and no prospect of a sunset.
However if you go to the Ba Game pages you will find a report and
pictures of the Christmas Day Mens' Ba' which went up.
December 1998 11:35 Merry Christmas.
A lovely day today, clear and dry with a chilly wind. A perfect
day for the Ba' and perhaps a sunset for Maeshowe too. Definitely
worth a look. Ba' results will be posted later on.
December 1998 12:40 Nice sunrise
again, after a very clear night. Totally overcast with some
rain, quite dark already. Not much chance of a sunset.
Keep watching this space! Happy Christmas.
December 1998 12:11 Again a beautiful
sunrise! However totally overcast at present. There is
somelightening in the west so maybe it could clear by sunset.
Sunshine here at sunset but not at Maeshowe. Sky completely
clear by 16:00.
december 1998 10:35 Very nice
sunrise again today. At present 90% clear and sunny. Calm,
but there is a band of cloud in the west. The best possibility
of a sunset for over a week. Update here at 14:00 today.
12:44 Still looking good and report from Maeshowe
is of clear skies to the SW. Sunny and clear here so good prospects.
Check the Maeshowe broadcast page at 14:40 GMT when the light will
commence striking the back wall. The sun did set down the passage,
but a cloud appeared and cut it off.
December 1998 12:20 Overcast but
bright, with some snow and a cold sotherly wind. Some bright
patches in SW, but no sunshine. Prognosis therefore not very
good today which is a pity as the setup is functioning perfectly.
No sunset yesterday. Long term forecast for week not bery good
either. Totally overcast at 14:30. Dark by 15:30.
December 1998 12:35 Slight fall
of snow and continuing snow showers, but with sunny breaks. Sky about
60% cloudy, but clearer in the east than the west. Could quite
possibly be a sunset, but then again there might be a shower instead.
Update at 13:59 Plenty of blue sky except on the
SW horizon! Sky could just clear at the last minute.
December 1998 12:55 Sunny periods and
showers. 80% cloud cover, but some large blue patches.
Not impossible, but looking very grey in south west. Worth looking.
Brilliant sunshine at 14:30, but now snow showers. Wind has
gone to NW which may be good for tomorrow. No sunset.
December 1998 13:28 Sunny periods,
some blue patches in south west. Possible sunset but not definite.
December 1998 13:04 Lovely sunrise.
Heavy showers but clearing from west. prospects of sunset today
- not impossible, but humid air means hazy light. Prospects
looking better for weekend as wind is due to go to the north.
December 1998 No report. No sunset.
December 1998 13:01 Showery with
sunny intervals. Big clouds to SW but sunny here at present.
Worth a look as sky could easily be clear.
December 1998 13:50 Clear sky,
with hazy sun due to approaching depression. Some clouds in
west. Good chances if a sunset, but the westerly clouds could
easily arrive before sunset. There was an excellent sunset,
light striking the back was at about 14:42 and ending just before
15:00. Experiments with "blocking stone" and lower outer passage.
